This 25-year-old story, about a sidelined dream brought to life, has only just begun.
Meet homemaker turned entrepreneur, J. Kalavathi, a rural woman hailing from the small village of Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu. Her lack of a formal education was compensated via years of working on her family’s farm, giving her invaluable experience in agricultural and cattle rearing. She is now putting her knowledge to good use by setting up an independent integrated farming system, consisting of a dairy farm, a mushroom farm, and vermicompost production.
“My dream of becoming the first woman entrepreneur in our village has finally taken its next step, with the help of Britannia, for which I will always be grateful”, says Kalavathi.
While J. Kalavathi may have achieved her goal of becoming the first woman entrepreneur in her little village, the journey has not come easy. Before winning the Britannia Marie Gold My Startup Contest, all she had to her name were two milk- bearing cows and a vision. Due to financial difficulties, her family was faced with the prospect of selling these two cows as well. However, through the financial support she received, she was able to salvage her business idea, build a cattle shed, and bring up her cattle count to eight. This allowed her to increase her monthly output by a significant 63%, from 330 litres to 540 litres
.
She now envisions expanding her milk production capacity while also focusing on the production of mushroom powder mixes, an increasingly popular item in today’s diabetic world. For this purpose, she is raising the amount of 5 lakh INR which will go toward investments in fodder production, water facilities, and the development of a mushroom shed and vermicomposting.

தமிழ்நாட்டின் அரியலூர் என்ற சிறிய கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு கிராமப்புறப் பெண்ணான ஜே.கலாவதி, தொழில்முனைவோராக மாறிய இல்லத்தரசியை சந்தியுங்கள். முறையான கல்வி இல்லாத ஒரு குறை, அவரது குடும்பத்தின் பண்ணையில் பல ஆண்டுகளாக வேலை செய்ததன் மூலம் ஈடுசெய்யப்பட்டது, விவசாயம் மற்றும் கால்நடை வளர்ப்பில் அவளுக்கு விலைமதிப்பற்ற அனுபவத்தை அளித்தது. ஒரு பால் பண்ணை, ஒரு காளான் பண்ணை மற்றும் மண்புழு உரம் உற்பத்தி ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்ட ஒரு சுயாதீன ஒருங்கிணைந்த விவசாய முறையை நிறுவுவதன் மூலம் அவர் இப்போது தனது அறிவை நன்றாகப் பயன்படுத்துகிறார்.
“எங்கள் கிராமத்தின் முதல் பெண் தொழில்முனைவோராக வேண்டும் என்ற எனது கனவு இறுதியாக பிரிட்டானியாவின் உதவியுடன் அதன் அடுத்த கட்டத்தை எடுத்துள்ளது, அதற்காக நான் எப்போதும் நன்றியுள்ளவளாக இருப்பேன்” என்கிறார் கலாவதி.
ஜே. கலாவதி தனது சிறிய கிராமத்தில் முதல் பெண் தொழிலதிபர் என்ற இலக்கை அடைந்திருந்தாலும், பயணம் எளிதாக இல்லை. பிரிட்டானியா மேரி கோல்ட் மை ஸ்டார்ட்அப் போட்டியில் வெற்றி பெறுவதற்கு முன்பு, அவளிடம் இருந்தது இரண்டு பால் தரும் பசுக்களும் ஒரு பார்வையும் மட்டுமே. பொருளாதாரச் சிக்கல் காரணமாக, அவரது குடும்பம் இந்த இரண்டு மாடுகளையும் விற்கும் வாய்ப்பை எதிர்கொண்டது. இருப்பினும், அவர் பெற்ற நிதியுதவியின் மூலம், அவர் தனது வணிக யோசனையை மீட்டெடுக்கவும், ஒரு கால்நடை கொட்டகையை கட்டவும், தனது கால்நடைகளின் எண்ணிக்கையை எட்டாக உயர்த்தவும் முடிந்தது. இது அவரது மாதாந்திர உற்பத்தியை 330 லிட்டரிலிருந்து 540 லிட்டராக குறிப்பிடத்தக்க 63% அதிகரிக்க அனுமதித்தது.

“Having to hide your dreams for the welfare of your family is the sad situation of many Indian homemakers like me. While my journey from homemaker to an entrepreneur has been challenging, my vision is to become an inspiration to all rural and less-educated women,” says Kalavathi.
