They say that the right influence can leave its mark forever. Those lucky enough to have felt such an influence will know that it becomes a constant form of reassurance that we carry with us for the rest of our lives.
R. Sumathi is one such individual whose unwavering source of inspiration comes from her mentor, the late Dr. Rema Mohan, consultant ophthalmologist and managing director of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre.
Her late employer was an individual who strongly believed in uplifting fellow women in the workforce, by identifying and training the talent she spotted in the field.
Sumathi was one of the many women to benefit from her care.
“She believed in women empowerment and was a successful entrepreneur herself. She started the hospital in a rented building, then eventually went on to own that building and expand her hospital with over 50 branches,” recalls Sumathi.
This is where the inspiration for setting up her own clinic first came from. However, the weight of her familial responsibilities made her hesitate. It was winning the Britannia Marie Gold My Startup Contest in 2020 that inspired her to confidently move forward with her dream business venture.
With the funds she received, she was able to set up her clinic under the name Elite Opticare and Health Centre. It was the first such clinic to open in her hometown, providing her with the golden opportunity of improving optical health awareness in her community.
As a professional optometrist with 9 years of experience, she has been successfully running her clinic since the past one and a half years. However, as her business grows, she needs additional equipment to expand her services and her customer base.

For this purpose, she is crowdfunding the amount 10.7 lakh INR. The funds will go towards purchasing laboratory machinery such as a Yumizen CA-60-chemistry analyser, a Binocular ABN-71B microscope, and other equipment.
